Big Moves With Small Steps for Pups

Moving is a big deal, and while you're busy packing boxes and coordinating logistics, don't forget about your furry best friend! A far-away move can be a significant change for your dog, but with a little planning and a lot of love, you can make the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible for them. Let's dive into how to prepare your canine companion for this adventure.

Start Early and Introduce Changes Gradually

Just like us, dogs thrive on routine. Abrupt changes can cause anxiety. So, as soon as you know about the move, begin introducing changes slowly.

  • Packing Exposure: Don't suddenly surround your dog with towering stacks of boxes. Instead, introduce them gradually. Let them sniff the empty boxes, walk around them, and even lie down in one if they're feeling curious! This helps them understand that these strange objects aren't a threat.

  • Adjusting Schedules: If your new location will involve a different daily schedule, start shifting your dog's feeding and walking times incrementally. A few minutes earlier or later each day can make a big difference in the long run.

  • Familiar Scents: Keep familiar-smelling blankets, toys, and bedding accessible throughout the packing process. These will provide comfort and security amidst the changing environment.

Health and Safety First

A healthy and safe dog travels much better.

Vet Visit is Key

Schedule a check-up with your veterinarian well in advance of the move. Discuss the travel plans and ask for advice on how to keep your dog comfortable during the journey. Ensure all vaccinations are up-to-date, and obtain copies of their medical records. If you're crossing state lines or international borders, there might be specific health certificates required.

Microchip Check

Now is a perfect time to ensure your dog's microchip information is current with your contact details. This is crucial in case they get lost during the move.

Travel Essentials Kit

Prepare a dedicated bag with your dog's essentials: food, water, bowls, leash, collar with ID tags (including the new address and phone number if possible), medications, first-aid kit, waste bags, familiar toys, and a comforting blanket or bed.

Making Travel Comfortable

The journey itself can be the most stressful part for your dog. Choose the safest and most comfortable mode of transport for them.

  • Car Travel: If you're driving, make sure your dog is properly secured in a carrier or with a dog seat belt harness. Never let them roam freely in the car. Take frequent breaks for potty breaks, water, and a little stretch. Keep the car well-ventilated and at a comfortable temperature.

  • Air Travel: If flying is necessary, research airline pet policies carefully. Some breeds may have restrictions. Ensure you have an airline-approved carrier that is the right size and well-ventilated. Acclimate your dog to the carrier beforehand by leaving it open and placing treats and toys inside. Consider the time of year and choose flights that avoid extreme temperatures.

Settling In to the New Home

Once you arrive, remember that your dog will need time to adjust to their new surroundings.

Create a Safe Haven

Designate a specific area in your new home with their familiar bed, toys, and water/food bowls. This will be their safe space where they can retreat and feel secure.

Explore Gradually

Introduce your dog to the new house and neighborhood slowly. Start with short walks around the yard and gradually extend them as they become more comfortable. Keep them on a leash during these initial explorations.

Patience and Reassurance

Your dog may exhibit signs of anxiety, such as restlessness, whining, or changes in appetite. Be patient, offer plenty of reassurance, and maintain a calm and consistent routine.

New Vet Introduction

As soon as you're settled, find a local veterinarian and schedule a visit to establish a relationship.

Moving is a significant life event for both you and your furry family member. By preparing thoughtfully and prioritizing your dog's well-being throughout the process, you can help them transition smoothly and happily into their new home. Remember, your calm and loving presence will be their greatest comfort during this time. Here's to new adventures together!
