Lap Dog Love: Why Your Dog Likes to Sit On You

While some may find it endearing and others a bit stifling, dogs sitting on their owners is a common behavior with various motivations.

Credit: Kristin Hardwick

Security and Comfort: Dogs often view their owners as a source of safety and comfort. Sitting on their lap can be a way to feel protected and secure, especially in unfamiliar or stressful situations. [1]

Warmth and Closeness: Dogs are naturally drawn to warmth and physical contact. Sitting on their owner's lap can be a way to seek out body heat and feel closer to their beloved companion. [2]

Attention-Seeking: If a dog receives attention (petting, praise, etc.) when sitting on their owner, they may learn to repeat the behavior to solicit this positive reinforcement. [3]

Dominance: In some cases, sitting on an owner can be a subtle display of dominance, asserting their position in the social hierarchy. This is more likely if the dog also exhibits other dominant behaviors. [4]

Scent Marking: Dogs have scent glands in their paws and bodies. Sitting on their owner can be a way to deposit their scent and "claim" them as their own. [5]

While the motivation behind this behavior can vary, it's often a combination of factors. If you enjoy your dog's cuddles, there's usually no harm in letting them sit on your lap. However, if the behavior becomes excessive or problematic, it's worth consulting a veterinarian or a certified dog trainer.
