Every day, we celebrate our shared love of dogs and hopefully brighten your day. Enjoy!

That exuberant leap of greeting when you walk through the door is classic dog behavior, but what's behind those enthusiastic jumps?
Excitement and Greeting: Dogs often jump on their owners as a way to express their excitement and joy at being reunited. It's their way of saying hello and showing affection. In dog-to-dog interactions, face-to-face contact is common during greetings, and jumping can be an attempt to achieve this. [1]
Attention-Seeking: Jumping can be a learned behavior. If a dog receives attention (even negative attention like pushing them away) when jumping, they may continue the behavior to elicit a reaction from their owner. [2]
Scent: Dogs have scent glands on their faces, and jumping up can be a way to get closer to their owner's face and gather information through scent. [3]
Playful Invitation: Some dogs jump as an invitation to play, especially if accompanied by playful bows or tail wags.
While jumping can be an expression of love, it can also be problematic, especially with larger dogs. If you prefer your dog to keep all four paws on the floor, consistent training and positive reinforcement of alternative behaviors (like sitting) can help curb the jumping habit.
