Thanksgiving Foods That Are Harmful to Dogs

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and of course, food. But while we're enjoying our turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes, it's important to remember that not all of our Thanksgiving feast is safe for our furry friends.

Here are some of the most common Thanksgiving foods that can be harmful to dogs:

  • Turkey skin and bones: Turkey skin and bones can be choking hazards for dogs, and they can also splinter and cause internal injuries.

  • Stuffing: Stuffing can be harmful to dogs because it often contains onions, garlic, and other ingredients that are toxic to them.

  • Mashed potatoes: Mashed potatoes can be harmful to dogs because they often contain butter, milk, and other ingredients that can cause digestive upset.

  • Gravy: Gravy can be harmful to dogs because it often contains fat and salt, which can cause pancreatitis and other health problems.

  • Desserts: Desserts, such as pies and cakes, can be harmful to dogs because they often contain sugar and chocolate, which can be toxic to them.

What to do if your dog eats something they shouldn't

If you think your dog has eaten something that is harmful to them, it's important to contact your veterinarian immediately. Do not try to make your dog vomit at home, as this could make their condition worse.

Here are some additional tips for keeping your dog safe this Thanksgiving:

  • Keep all of your Thanksgiving food out of your dog's reach.

  • Do not give your dog table scraps.

  • Be aware of the signs of food poisoning in dogs, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.

  • If you're not sure if a food is safe for your dog, err on the side of caution and don't give it to them.

Happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving to you and your family, furry and otherwise!
