Why Do Dogs Chase Cars (and Try to Bite Tires)?

Dogs chasing cars, especially those that focus on biting tires, are dangerous behaviors rooted in several instincts and learned responses. Think of their ancestors, wolves, who hunted by chasing prey. To a dog, a car can trigger that same instinct, looking like a fast-moving target. The tires, being the most active part, become the focus, further exciting that prey drive.

For some dogs, the chase is simply pure fun. The car's speed and noise turn it into an exciting game. The tire's movement becomes a playful challenge, almost like the dog is trying to "catch" it.

Territorial instincts can also be involved. Some dogs see a car entering their space as a threat. They chase and bark, or even bite at the tires, to try to drive it away.

In addition, the sights, sounds, and smells of a moving car are highly stimulating for dogs. Those spinning tires, in particular, are visually captivating and unpredictable, holding their attention.

Lastly, don't forget about learned behavior. If a dog has chased a car before and gotten away with it or even gotten attention from their owner for doing it (even if it's scolding), they might keep doing it.

It's crucial to stop this behavior because chasing cars is incredibly dangerous. Training is key: teach commands like "leave it," gradually introduce the dog to cars, and reward it for staying calm. Always use a secure leash and fences, and avoid areas with lots of traffic. If you're struggling, a professional dog trainer can help.
