Why Does My Dog Shake Their Head?

That head shake your dog does โ€“ sometimes cute, sometimes accompanied by a shower of drool โ€“ isn't just a random action. There are several reasons why dogs engage in this behavior.

Ear Health: One of the most common reasons for head shaking is ear discomfort. Itchiness, irritation, or pain caused by ear infections, ear mites, allergies, or foreign objects in the ear canal can trigger head shaking. [1]

Drying Off: Just like us, dogs shake their heads to remove water from their ears and face after a bath or swim. This instinctive action helps prevent moisture buildup and potential ear problems. [2]

Relieving Discomfort: Head shaking can also be a way for dogs to dislodge something irritating their face or head, such as a bug, debris, or a tangled piece of fur. [3]

Attention-Seeking: If a dog learns that head shaking gets them attention from their owner, they might repeat the behavior, even without any underlying discomfort. [4]

Neurological Issues: In rare cases, frequent or persistent head shaking can be a symptom of a neurological problem. If you notice your dog shaking their head excessively or showing other unusual signs, consult your veterinarian. [5]

If your dog is shaking their head frequently or seems distressed, it's important to have them checked by a veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical issues.
